How to find an ABN

Every business that invoices other businesses in Australia should have an Australian Business Number (ABN): an 11-digit number issued by the Australian Business Register (ABR). Here is how to find one.

1. Look at their paperwork

Tax invoices for taxable sales must show the supplier's ABN. It also often appears on quotes, the website footer, email signatures and receipts.

2. Search by business name

Type the start of the business or company name into the search box above. Results list matching entity names and business/trading names, with active ABNs first. Use the first word of the legal name for the best results.

3. Use the ACN for companies

For a company, the ABN is usually its 9-digit ACN with two digits in front. If you have the ACN, search the company name and confirm the ACN shown on the ABN record matches.

4. Confirm the details

Once you find the record, check the ABN is active, the name matches the business you deal with, and — if they charge GST — that it is registered for GST.
