How to check GST registration

A business can only charge GST if it is registered for GST. Every ABN record on Find My ABN shows the GST status and the date it started.

Who must register

Businesses generally must register for GST when their GST turnover is $75,000 or more ($150,000 or more for non-profit organisations). Taxi and ride-sourcing drivers must register regardless of turnover. Others may register voluntarily.

Why it matters

If you pay GST to a supplier that is not registered, you generally can't claim that GST as a credit. Check the ABN record before claiming input tax credits, and ask the supplier to reissue the invoice without GST if they aren't registered.
